Marshall Medical Junior Volunteer Wins Award

Elise Kennedy, Marshall Medical Center junior volunteer, was named 2004 Youth Volunteer of the Year by the Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA), Sacramento region. It was presented on Friday, November 19 at the 2004 Volunteer Spirit Awards. The award, accompanied by a Margaret Einspahr Memorial Scholarship, was given to Elise for demonstrating outstanding volunteer service and contributing over 300 hours in her community.  The competition is sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Sacramento for volunteers throughout El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties.  “Elise does a tremendous job of volunteering in all areas of the hospital, including playing piano for patients in our Transitional Care Center,” according to Barbara Smiley, Marshall’s Community Volunteer Program manager.  “She is taking classes in the hospital to further her nursing education and will someday be a wonderful nurse.”

A program for young people aged 13 to 18, Marshall junior volunteers can assist at Marshall Hospital, the Community Health Library, the business office and many other areas in the organization.  They can also help at community events and with special projects.  They attend a monthly meeting to schedule their hours and work at least 3 hours each month. For more information, contact Barbara Smiley, Marshall's Community Volunteer Program coordinator at (530) 626-2893.
