Marshall Medical Junior Volunteer Wins
Award
Elise Kennedy, Marshall Medical Center
junior volunteer, was named 2004 Youth Volunteer of the Year by the
Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA), Sacramento region. It was
presented on Friday, November 19 at the 2004 Volunteer Spirit Awards.
The award, accompanied by a Margaret Einspahr Memorial Scholarship, was
given to Elise for demonstrating outstanding volunteer service and
contributing over 300 hours in her community. The competition is
sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Sacramento for volunteers
throughout El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties. “Elise does
a tremendous job of volunteering in all areas of the hospital, including
playing piano for patients in our Transitional Care Center,” according
to Barbara Smiley, Marshall’s Community Volunteer Program manager. “She
is taking classes in the hospital to further her nursing education and
will someday be a wonderful nurse.”
A program
for young people aged 13 to 18, Marshall junior volunteers can assist at
Marshall Hospital, the Community Health Library, the business office and
many other areas in the organization. They can also help at community
events and with special projects. They attend a monthly meeting to
schedule their hours and work at least 3 hours each month. For more
