When it comes to cancer treatment, the last thing a patient needs to deal with is a long journey just to get to the treatment. Up until a few years ago, most of the cancer treatment provided for El Dorado County patients was done in Sacramento. As part of its ongoing mission - “to promote health improvement and provide health services of extraordinary value and quality to our community” – Marshall moved forward with establishing a comprehensive cancer program.

As evidence that Marshall is committed to providing the highest quality services, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) continues to grant approval with commendation to Marshall’s Cancer Program. "Approval by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have committed to providing the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment and are able to comply with the CoC standards," said Marshall’s Manager of Cancer Services Annette Glass. “I am proud that Marshall's Cancer Program continues to earn this approval. For those battling the disease, having a quality, accredited cancer program right in their community in El Dorado County is a huge, uplifting plus. People we see in the resource center tell us how wonderful our support groups are and how they were amazed at the services and support that is available so close to home. They are also surprised that we offer this to the community at large – you don’t have to be a Marshall patient to join our support groups and use the resource center.” The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that more than 1.3 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2006. There are currently only 1,400 CoC-approved cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Only one in four hospitals have approved cancer programs. This 25 percent of hospitals diagnose and/or treat 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.

Approval is granted upon the demonstration of a commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement). In addition, a facility must receive a compliance rating for all other standards.

Almost all of Marshall’s cancer services are provided at its outpatient campus in Cameron Park. The program’s comprehensive services include:
  • Board-certified hematologists/oncologists
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services including CT, MRI, digital mammography with CAD, and a combination PET/CT scanning unit
  • Surgical services.
  • Pharmaceutical services and pathology.
  • Specialized oncology nurses.
  • Nutrition and home care services.
  • Marshall Radiation Oncology.
  • Cancer Care Conference (Tumor Board) and Cancer Registry.
  • Education, outreach, social services, printed and online resources and support groups through the Marshall Cancer Resource Center.
  • Stereotactic needle biopsies are available for women who need a diagnostic work up beyond digital mammography.

Through an exclusive partnership with the American Cancer Society, the CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoC-approved cancer program. This information is shared with the public on the American Cancer Society’s Web site at www.cancer.org and through the American Cancer society’s National Cancer Information Center at 1-800-ACS-2345.
