Areas of particular need for facility improvement include the Emergency Department & The Birthplace, or maternity unit.
To address the areas of greatest need first, the construction will occur in phases. The new wing will first include a much-needed 32 bed emergency department and a birthing center with 17 private patient rooms. When the wing is complete, it will also feature a 12 bed intensive care unit, a 34 bed inpatient medical/surgical unit with private rooms, and a daylight basement to house a new kitchen and cafeteria to serve patients, visitors and staff.
What happens next?
The first step will be the removal of several nearby houses that Marshall has purchased from neighbors over the last few years, but only after Habitat for Humanity comes in and takes away any usable materials for future charitable projects. Grading and development of new parking areas will follow. Then it’s on to actual ground breaking for the new wing – slated for late 2008.
“We’ll be looking at various ways to minimize any unavoidable inconvenience during this construction period,” Administrator and CEO James Whipple says. “That includes things like potential valet parking for patients and visitors during the parking lot construction.” Completion of the new wing and phase one patient care areas – emergency and maternity – is estimated for mid-2011. The build-out of other planned units will be scheduled based on funding availability.
We’ll post ongoing updates on this web site routinely during construction.
