Watch Your Step! Free Fall Prevention Event for Community Members

Did you know that 1 in 3 Americans aged 65 and over falls every year? Are you one of those who has wrestled with gravity and lost? Marshall, in partnership with El Dorado County Senior Services, is offering a free fall prevention event for community members. Fall Prevention Day will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Senior Center, located at 937 Spring Street in Placerville.

“Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans,” said Star Walker, supervisor with Senior Services programs. “With each fall, people can become more fearful of falling and restrict their activities. However, falling is not an inevitable part of aging. Through lifestyle adjustments, screenings and evidence-based programs, falls among seniors can be reduced.”

Fall Prevention Day will include practical information, as well as free screening activities offered by local health care professionals to help individuals avoid falls. Screenings will include:

  • Vision screening
  • Balance/Strength screening
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Medication review
  • Home safety
  • Footwear assessment

Light refreshments will also be available at the event. For additional information about Fall Prevention Day, please call Marshall at (530) 626-2990. For information about other Marshall programs and services visit www.marshallmedical.org
