About Wai Kan (Karen) Chiu

Wai Kan (Karen) Chiu, MD, PhD, obtained her undergraduate degree in molecular and cell biology from UC Berkeley.  She then went on to complete basic science research at the National Institute on Aging, and clinical research at the University of California, San Francisco.  She earned a medical degree (MD) and a doctoral degree (PhD) from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.  After completing her internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine, she returned to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to complete a gastroenterology fellowship.

Dr. Chiu has conducted and published multiple research papers in peer reviewed journals focusing on genetics and various gastrointestinal medical conditions. She presented her research on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease at the University of Pittsburg’s Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

In her free time, Dr. Chiu enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her golden retriever.
