Diabetes and Foot Care
Diabetics have special needs for foot care. One of the possible side effects
of diabetes is nerve damage in the feet. This can cause a tingling or
discomforting feeling in the feet, and even make your foot more susceptible
to cuts and infections. On top of that, diabetes restricts blood flow
to the feet, making it difficult for them to heal from wounds. If left
untreated, gangrene can develop and the foot may need to be amputated.
Thankfully, diabetic foot problems can be prevented with proper care and
management. It is recommended that you receive a checkup with a podiatrist
or diabetes specialist at least once a year to ensure that the nerves
in your feet are still functioning properly. If you ever see abnormalities
on your feet, including minor cuts or warts, schedule an appointment with
a podiatrist as soon as possible.
